Alyssa's Story:

I am 9 years old and I live in Olathe. I am so lucky to have a lot of friends at school, they are fun to be around. I love anything to do with the Disney Channel. Also I like to listen to all kinds of music, but “The Who” is my favorite band. I love to ride my horse, Rock, during Hippo-therapy. I also enjoy aquatic therapy especially the hot tub which is my reward for all my hard work. I love to laugh and have a goofy, sassy personality that just wants to have fun and live everyday to the fullest. I also suffer from Rett Syndrome.

Rett Syndrome is a Neuro-Developmental disorder. This disorder primarily occurs in girls 1/10,000 live births. I was 2 ½ when I was diagnosed. I developed normally until about 6 months of age then I went through a recession. I used to be able to feed myself and play with toys now I have lost all purposeful hand usage, the ability to use language and loss of motor skills. By the time I was 3, I had lost all my skills except sitting up. My family has to take care of all my basic needs and more for the rest of my life because I am not able to do it by myself.

Despite suffering from Rett Syndrome, I am a strong girl and always have a smile on my face. My family says that my laugh is the greatest gift. And that I am truly a blessing to them !!! Please help us find a cure for this devasting disorder and help me and my fellow rett friends.

About Rett Syndrome
Rett Syndrome occurs mostly in infant girls. Symptoms appear after an early period of apparently normal or near normal development until six to eighteen months of life, when there is a slowing down or stagnation of skills. A period of regression then follows when she loses communication skills and purposeful use of her hands.
